What does a Social Worker do?

The role of a social worker is to work alongside clients to support them in developing their mental, social and emotional capacities. Through a strengths-based approach, social workers are trained to implement counselling techniques and social work theories to strengthen mental health and achieve individualised goals.

Social workers are different to other professions as they view a client in the context of their environment and aim to work collaboratively with schools, families and children to develop capacity-building and strategies to overcome perceived barriers. Social workers have a range of skills that can assist in both therapeutic emotional support and a focus on capacity-building.

What sort of things can a social worker help with?

A social worker can support you and your child through a range of evidence-based strategies:
  • Therapeutic and counselling support,
  • Affect regulation and developing coping skills
  • Support with social and friendship problems
  • Behaviour support, including assessment of needs and development of goals
  • Trauma-informed care and therapy
  • Mental health support using a recovery model and cognitive behavioural therapy approaches
  • Facilitate self-knowledge and emotional acceptance

Funding

Social workers can provide counselling support via private fees, VOCAT, or NDIS.

To use NDIS funds, you would need to the item ‘Improved Daily Living’ in your plan. Improved Daily Living provides funds to access an allied health professionals and counselling.  If you are  not sure, check with your LAC or Plan Manager.
